Protect Your Skin!

It finally feels like spring is here! It’s warm enough to dig the shorts and sundresses from the back of our closets and spend afternoons basking in the sun. Most San Diegans live for this type of weather, and after the wet winter we’ve had it feels like everyone is dying to feel that sunshine on their skin.

Before you head out the door, though, make sure you’re protecting your skin! Spring sunshine doesn’t feel as intense as summer sunshine, and it’s easy to think you can forego SPF for the afternoon. Don’t forget how much damage that can do! In addition to the obvious discomfort of a burn, sun exposure can also lead to premature aging, discoloration, and a higher risk of skin cancer.

Here are some quick reminders about how to be skin-safe as we head into our favorite time of the year! (While you should definitely be wearing sunscreen year-round, it seems especially important to remind our readers now that we’re likely to spend more time in the sun.)

  1. Higher SPF is not always better! You should be good with SPF 30 as long as you reapply after swimming, sweating, or just being in the sun for a couple of hours.
  2. The SPF in your makeup is not enough to protect your face. It’s a great protection booster, but you should not consider that enough on its own.
  3. Make sure your SPF is broad spectrum and protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  4. Don’t neglect your neck and chest. These can also be easily sun damaged and will show signs of aging as quickly as your face.
