Dairy Could Be Sabotaging Your Skin

In our last post, we talked about some foods you may have eliminated from your diet that your skin really needs. Now we want to talk about one food group that could be the cause of your acne, inflammation, and other skin problems.

Most of us enjoy dairy in one form or another- milk in our cereal, a cheese snack before dinner, a scoop of ice cream on a summer outing. However, if your skin is struggling no matter what products you invest in, you should consider ditching the dairy.

Dairy is not inherently bad, but dairy cows naturally have hormones like progesterone and insulin growth factor. They are then given hormones so that they continuously lactate and produce milk, which then results in increased hormone levels in the dairy products they produce. These hormones hide in our fancy cheese plates and glasses of milk, and make their way into your body. Your skin reacts to these hormones with breakouts, inflammation, and increased signs of aging.

If you think dairy is affecting the state of your skin, try removing dairy from your diet for 12 full weeks. If you see your skin improve in this time period, we’ve found a culprit! From that point, consider making changes that make sense for your lifestyle. Switch to a non-dairy milk like soy or almond, limit cheese intake, save ice cream only for special treats. At the very least, buy organic dairy products wherever possible to limit the amount of hormones and antibiotics you ingest.

Dairy products tend to be delicious, and cutting them out forever seems like a huge task! Your goals should be to cut out all of the dairy products you can. If that doesn’t make sense for your lifestyle because you need milk in your morning coffee, or you don’t function well without buttered toast, experiment with alternatives like vegan butter or almond milk. Finally, if you can’t find a successful substitute, buy organic and limit your dairy to a small amount. Gorgeous, glowing skin feels better than any specialty goat cheese ever could.

The Nutrient Your Skin is Probably Missing

We have spent so much time purging our diets of “bad” food that we may actually be depriving our body of the nutrients it needs to flourish. There are certainly foods that have no benefit, like sugary drinks or donuts, or deep-fried Twinkies. However, one food group that we have unfairly banished from our lives is fat. Fat has certainly earned its bad reputation as the artery-clogging, heart stopping food group that it is, but we should step back and examine which types of fat are actually at fault.

Fat, in moderation and from healthy sources, can actually be the secret to maintaining a healthy glow. So what are the right sources? Fish, avocado, olive oil, nuts, and plant-based sources are great places to find the right kind of fat. These contain high concentrations of essential fatty acids that you’ve probably heard of- omega-3 and omega-6. You can also take daily supplements if you are unable to intake enough of these fats though your diet.

Of course, fats like butter, fried foods, chicken skin, etc. are not in this category. They are bad for your skin and your overall health, and should be consumed sparingly if at all. Even good fats should be consumed in moderation— they are still calorie-dense and should make up about 35% of your diet, or slightly less.

When your diet lacks these fats, your skin becomes dry, dull, and can exhibit other unhealthy appearances. You may also notice dull, brittle hair and fingernails that break easily. There are tons of health benefits to be derived from omega fatty acids, beyond improving your appearance. They help your brain, your eyes, your joints, your immune system, and so much more. How can you add these healthy fats to your diet? Snack on almonds, top off your sandwich with avocado, cook with coconut oil, munch on walnuts and brazil nuts, scoop chia seeds into your morning yogurt, or nibble on sunflower seeds. There are so many delicious ways to up your healthy fat intake!

The good news is that you should go eat a salmon and avocado roll, or get the avocado toast at brunch with a drizzle of olive oil. All of these recommended foods are delicious and easy to eat, and now we know that they are also healthy and will make your skin glow!

Acne-Safe Makeup

So you’re using all the right skin care products and getting regular facials, but still experiencing breakouts? It sounds like you’re on the right path, but you might be overlooking one critical piece. Your makeup, particularly your foundation, needs to be specially formulated for acne-prone skin!

Keep in mind that everything that touches your face can cause flare-ups, especially for those of us that battle acne. From hands touching your face throughout the day, to loose hair depositing oil and products on your forehead and cheeks, to the foundation and makeup brushes we pat onto our skin, everything has the potential to disrupt or improve your skin.

Foundation should include calming, anti-inflammatory properties to keep your skin soothed. It should also contain anti-bacterial properties that inhibit the bacteria P. acnes, which contributes to acne. Stay away from skincare fads like coconut oil, unless your esthetician directs you otherwise. Labels like “Organic” and “Natural” do not mean that a product is good for your skin, so don’t be fooled without looking closely at the ingredients.

Finally, keep your brushes clean by washing them in soapy water once a week. Bacteria will build up on them no matter how great your skincare routine, so this step is crucial to keeping your skin clear.

Clear skin starts with a great skin care routine, but is affected by everything else you put on your skin throughout the day. Make sure you are conscious of all these things to make sure all the time and effort used to care for your skin are not going to waste!

Try Eyebrow Microblading and You’ll Never Look Back

You’ve been hearing more and more people talk about microblading, and some of your friends are probably talking about doing it. What exactly is it?

Microblading is a semi-permanent form of tattoo, and everyone right now is talking about microblading their eyebrows. We all want those full brows but not everyone is blessed with the perfect arch and thick eyebrow hair to work with! Microblading is the perfect solution for anyone who wants gorgeous, hassle-free brows.

Why choose microblading? Microblading looks more natural than a traditional tattoo, since the process is intended to replicate the look of real individual hairs. It also lasts about 12-18 months, which is less of a commitment than a tattoo. Eyebrow extensions are high maintenance and require you to take special care of them and avoid rubbing them. Microblading also beats having to fill your brows in every moment and gets you one step closer to truly being able to say “I woke up like this”.

The microblading process begins with a topical numbing cream and a liquid anesthetic. Microblading is still a form of tattooing, so it is important to make sure the client is as comfortable as possible. Some clients worry about experiencing pain during the procedure, but it’s very rare to experience more than slight discomfort. The specialist will spend the first hour drawing your brows in using a removable pen, to make sure the final look is planned before anything permanent begins.

There are so many pros to choosing microblading to get the brows you dream of! There is no downtime, so you are free to post your amazing results as soon as your brows are done. You don’t have to worry about treating your new brows with extra care either. You can rub them, you can go swimming, all without worry!

Make you appointment with Wax Me Boutique today and get ready to flaunt those gorgeous brows! We’re having a special for the first 10 clients who book an appointment. Email us for more information.

Watch Out for Multilevel Marketing Skin Care!

How many of your friends are independent skin care consultants offering you incredible results with their line of skin products? We all have at least a few Facebook friends who are in this business— you’ll know them by their home parties, their recurring posts about the improvements they’ve seen in their/their clients’ skin, and their persistent invitations to do a quick skin consultation with them. However, if you are looking for real results it’s best to stay far away from these products.

At best, these products are priced like professional products but manufactured like drugstore products. Consultants make money on commissions from their sales, and the sales of anyone they have recruited, and the sales of recruits below those people, so these products need to cover a lot of costs for each sale.

At worst, the consultants are not educated enough in skin care to give you the product with the correct ingredients and can cause your skin to worsen or create new conditions. Estheticians have taken classes and passed a state board exam that indicates they can correctly identify skin conditions and treat them. Not all acne can be treated the same, not all dryness in skin can be treated the same, certain allergies do not pair well with certain ingredients, and so on. Only a person who has studied skin care would know about all these – a skin care representative for a multilevel marketing brand is very unlikely to.

It is always best to work with a skincare professional, especially if you have problem skin and want to address issues like dryness, acne, aging, etc. If you’re going to pay professional skincare prices, be sure you are getting professional skincare products and actually benefitting your skin. Skin care should be very personalized, and working with a professional consistently can help you try something new and adjust your course as you see how each new product interacts with your skin.

If you used one of these brands and saw skin problems emerge or worsen as a result, come see us today to start undoing the damage! At Wax Me Boutique, we specialize in providing customized services and products that will work with your skin rather than against it. Book your appointment today and get back on the path to healthy, glowing skin!

Protect Your Skin!

It finally feels like spring is here! It’s warm enough to dig the shorts and sundresses from the back of our closets and spend afternoons basking in the sun. Most San Diegans live for this type of weather, and after the wet winter we’ve had it feels like everyone is dying to feel that sunshine on their skin.

Before you head out the door, though, make sure you’re protecting your skin! Spring sunshine doesn’t feel as intense as summer sunshine, and it’s easy to think you can forego SPF for the afternoon. Don’t forget how much damage that can do! In addition to the obvious discomfort of a burn, sun exposure can also lead to premature aging, discoloration, and a higher risk of skin cancer.

Here are some quick reminders about how to be skin-safe as we head into our favorite time of the year! (While you should definitely be wearing sunscreen year-round, it seems especially important to remind our readers now that we’re likely to spend more time in the sun.)

  1. Higher SPF is not always better! You should be good with SPF 30 as long as you reapply after swimming, sweating, or just being in the sun for a couple of hours.
  2. The SPF in your makeup is not enough to protect your face. It’s a great protection booster, but you should not consider that enough on its own.
  3. Make sure your SPF is broad spectrum and protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  4. Don’t neglect your neck and chest. These can also be easily sun damaged and will show signs of aging as quickly as your face.

Talk to your esthetician about which sunscreen you should be using on sensitive skin like your face. At Wax Me Boutique, we have hand-selected our favorite face sunscreens to keep your skin safe without undoing all of the work you do by caring for your skin daily.

Bold, Beautiful Brows

By now, most of us are thinking back to all the time we spent plucking our brows to a thin line in the 90s and early 2000s and mentally kicking our younger selves. After all that tweezing, how will we ever get those beautiful full brows everyone else seems to have?

Well, the answer is certainly not to let them grow wild. Thick brows are in, but no one said anything good about stray and unruly hairs. Full brows will frame your face beautifully, provide structure and balance, and give you a striking look- but only if they are properly groomed. There are three main steps to getting that bold and confident look without looking like a bear.

First, get your eyebrows professionally shaped! Caterpillar eyebrows are not what you’re going for- the secret to pulling off the thick brows is to have angles in the right places, based on your face shape and facial features. You should get an initial shaping followed by regular touch-ups to maintain the brow shape. You might not even get the shape you want right away if you are a recovering pluckaholic, so it’s important to put down the tweezers and talk to your professional about coming back when your eyebrows have grown in a bit.

Second, if you want to have full eyebrows without makeup, there are many products that will promote hair growth and thickness. Grande Brow Serum is our personal favorite – available for sale at Wax Me Boutique. This product will give you those gorgeous brows you’re after! Combine that will regular waxing and your brows will be Instagram-worthy every day.

Finally, eyebrow makeup products are just what you need for getting that gorgeous model look. At the most basic level, an eyebrow powder or pencil applied in short strokes will provide the illusion of fullness wherever you may be lacking, while also allowing you to define and shape your arch. A clear or tinted gel is also great for making sure all of the hard work you did stays put. Billion Dollar Brows has an amazing line of products and is also sold at the salon.

That’s it! Follow these steps to kick your eyebrows up a notch – you will feel confident and gorgeous no matter what the rest of your makeup is doing. Start today with an appointment at Wax Me Boutique – we can guide you (and your eyebrows!) in the right direction to get the look you want.
