Home Skincare Remedies

This post may have caught your attention because you think I can give you a tip on a common household ingredient that will make your skin perfect. However, I am here to tell you the exact opposite. Every day I am flooded with the newest trend of what household item to put on your skin –  baking soda, lemon, petroleum jelly, and other skin-destroying, pore-clogging ingredients. I want my readers to know how to tell the good from the bad as they also get news of models who only put coconut oil on their faces, or any other trendy but ultimately destructive fad.

When you read an article toting the supposed benefits of this “all-natural, chemical free, inexpensive!” at-home treatment that will change your skin-  well, be skeptical. First, check to see the source and if any dermatologists or estheticians were cited in the article. Look these people up to make sure they are reliable sources who have actually studied skin and skincare. Is the source a trendy magazine interviewing the biggest actress in Hollywood? Skip that one, or at least do more research to find out what estheticians and derms have to say.

Second, consider that not everyone has the same skin type. If a person already has great skin and never gets acne, they are more likely to be successful with a coconut oil treatment because it is so moisturizing and makes your skin glow. However, if you are acne-prone, your pores will clog and you will break out. If your skin is easily irritated, scrubbing with salt (or any other harsh household item) will leave your skin red, splotchy and inflamed. Maybe the person on the blog you read has incredible looking before and after pictures they are using to prove their success, but without knowing anything about their skin we can’t know if it will have the same effect on you.

If you are drawn to the idea of all-natural, chemical-free products, keep in mind that chemicals are not always bad. Water, salt, and other common ingredients are chemicals. It is best to find a trusted esthetician that uses high-quality organic brands and work with that person to find the best solution for your skin.

Finally, keep in mind that not every household product will destroy your skin. Honey, lavender, certain oils, and more do have real skin benefits. If you are interested in trying something like this, you should talk to your esthetician or derm – especially if you have problem skin. They will be able to advise you on which of these will work well with your skin type and how to use them.

Stop by Wax Me Boutique today to see our carefully selected products, ask all your questions about natural beauty products, and schedule a skin consultation! We would be happy to advise you and figure out the perfect skincare regimen for you.

Winter Skin

Dropping temperatures, whipping winds and cranked-up heaters can lead to dry, dull, irritated or cracking skin. We all know the struggles or keeping skin moisturized but not oily, and fearing those thick moisturizers because we can feel them clogging our pores even as they soothe our skin.

While a richer moisturizer might work great for you, there are other ways we can lock in moisture without risking clogged pores and breakouts. If you do choose to switch up your moisturizer in winter months, be sure to talk to your esthetician so they can help you choose the right one for your skin type!

The first rule of winter skincare is to use a light hand when applying products that may irritate your skin, like acne spot treatments. These work well because they dry out blemishes, but can also dry out your skin. The same goes for vigorous exfoliation treatments that you use regularly. Switch out the head on your cleansing brush to a gentle one and swap your heavy exfoliating scrub for a milder one. Also, avoid using traditional soaps, as these strip the skin of necessary oils, leading to increased moisture loss and dryness. Instead, use pH-balanced, gentle cleansers. You might want to switch to a cream-based cleanser if you are in a particularly cold climate.

Next, make sure that your moisturizer contains two important things: humectant ingredients to draw moisture into your skin, and occlusive ingredients that trap that moisture. Look for topical products that contain urea and glycerin, as these are the two ingredients, in addition to water, that are shown to hydrate cells internally. A Hydrating Hylauronic Serum contains these, as well as other humectant and occlusive ingredients, and is a great addition to any regimen.

In addition, avoid those scalding hot showers. That hot water might feel perfect when you’re shivering from the cold, but the heat will further strip your skin of moisture and leave you feeling dry and itchy. Wash your face in lukewarm water and apply moisturizer while it’s still a little damp to help lock in that moisture.

Another great tip is to use a cool mist humidifier indoors. This will keep your home climate at a more optimal level for your skin and reduce the drying effects of artificial heat and cold winter winds.

Peel a little, glow a lot!

Chemical peels sound intimidating, but they don’t have to be! We’ve all seen a chemical peel exaggerated in the media to make the recipient appear like an inflamed, peeling mess who must hide their face for days, Not the case! Peels that require downtime are outdated and unnecessary.  New approaches focus on regular peels that yield results over time, not one aggressive treatment that leaves you unable to face the world.

So, what are some other misconceptions about peels?

Well, you will not necessarily see peeling and flaking after a peel. If your skin is healthy, you may not peel at all, while unhealthy skin may require a few procedures before it visibly exfoliates.

You might hesitate to undergo a peel because your skin is sensitive or dry. You’ll be happy to hear that there are peels formulated especially for sensitive skin! You can get all the great benefits of a peel without worrying about irritating your skin.

You should not expect to see the same results every time you receive a peel. Your skin condition, environmental changes like humidity and temperature, and previous peels will affect the amount of visible exfoliating you see.

Regular chemical peels are the key to getting that jealousy-inducing glow that makes you wonder – does that person do yoga and drink green juice all day? They help your skin regenerate and turn over dead skin cells that are dulling your complexion. They are also great for reducing acne, acne scars, aging, dark spots, and other skin woes!

Still hesitant? We don’t want you to miss out on the clear, bright complexion you can get from a great series of peels. For the month of October, buy a 3 peel or treatment package for $285 ($95 each) and enjoy a complimentary Neck & Décoletté Treatment. Contact Wax Me Boutique to talk to one of our professionals about your specific skin concerns and how different peels would impact you.

What SPF should you be wearing?

The higher the SPF, the more protected you are, right? Well, it’s not quite as simple as that. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97%, and SPF 50 blocks 98%. Anything higher than that isn’t going to make a major impact. In fact, wearing a higher SPF may subconsciously make you feel more protected and keep you from reapplying as often as you should.

Estheticians recommend SPF 30 for daily use. This will keep you protected, especially when supplemented with limited sun exposure, protective clothing for your body and face, and reapplying sunscreen every two hours when you are spending time outdoors.

So, what is truly important when buying sunscreen? First, make sure that the label says “broad spectrum”. This will ensure that you are protected from UVA rays, which cause wrinkles, dark spots and premature aging, as well as UVB rays. You can also check the ingredient for the following: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule or oxybenzone. These are UVA-blocking ingredients that will protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Finally, make sure you are using the sunscreen every day! Just because it’s winter or you’re just going to be in an office all day doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen. UV rays penetrate clouds and reflect off snow, so even the bleakest day presents a danger. These rays also penetrate windows – all the time spent in your car really adds up on your skin if you’re not protecting it.

Sunscreen isn’t the thick, greasy formula it used to be. If you are reading this thinking that you would wear sunscreen if only you didn’t hate the feeling of it, you need to update your product! Talk to your esthetician to get the right formula for you. The latest sunscreen is light and absorbs easily into the skin without causing clogged pores. Once you’ve found a sunscreen you like, keep in mind that most sunscreen will expire after three years. Make sure you throw it out after that time as its effectiveness will have decreased. Also, keep sunscreen stored in cool places and make sure not to leave it in your car on a hot day. The heat will also change the chemical makeup and make the formula less effective.

All PCA Skin Broad Spectrum sunscreens are approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation for either daily or active use. Each of our sunscreen products also contain antioxidants such as caffeine and silybin, for ultimate protection. Available at Wax Me Boutique!

Sunless Tanning – Glow Safely

We love the look of a summer glow (and we like to keep it year-round!) but it’s not always safe and easy to maintain it. Even in sunny San Diego, our natural tans fade in the winter – and spending too much time in the sun can be time consuming, sweaty, and ultimately risky for your health. Sunless tanning is a quick, safe alternative that will give you that coveted golden look without the negative side effects of too much sun exposure.

The most obvious benefit of sunless tanning is reduced risk of skin cancer from UV radiation. Both natural sunlight and UV tanning beds have been linked to health risks, so using these to chase the tan you’re after can be detrimental to your health. We all want to spend time at the beach, but hours and hours spent roasting in the sun just for the sake of a tan are not advised – it is hot, exhausting and requires a serious time commitment. It also leads to premature wrinkles, unsightly tan lines, pores clogged with sweat and sunscreen or tanning oil, and enhanced skin imperfections.

In contrast, sunless tanning is quick, easy and safe. It is not linked to long-term health risks like skin cancer. It does not affect the aging process of your skin, will not leave tan lines, and will actually help even your skin tone as it provides some coverage for blemishes and other skin imperfections. UV rays will have the opposite effect, darkening blemishes and causing hyper-pigmentation in some cases.

The best way to get a sunless tan is to visit a professional. At-home products may have inconsistent, streaky results, but a professional spray tan will give you the best result every time. Wax Me Boutique estheticians are highly trained in giving you the perfect, natural-looking glow for your skin. Make an appointment today to see what a difference a few minutes in a spray tan booth can make! We offer a Happy Hour Special of $25 sunless tans every Thursday. Everyone feels more confident, slim and toned when their skin has that healthy, sun-kissed glow.

Celluma Light Therapy – Transform your skin

At Wax Me Boutique, we are always looking for the latest skin care technology to bring to our clients. We are so excited to have brought in an amazing new tool that will work wonders for your skin!

Celluma is a non-toxic, non-invasive LED treatment used worldwide by skincare professionals that utilizes energy light to bring healing and radiance to your skin. Low-level light therapy was originally developed by NASA, and its scientific effects on your skin are similar to the effects of the sun on a plant. The wavelength of the light on this device is designed to be absorbed by your skin cells so they can naturally restore themselves.

The treatment itself is simple. You can schedule a light therapy treatment alone, or as an add-on to another facial. Once your skin is clean and prepped, you will sit under the panel for about 30 minutes. The recommended frequency for best results is twice weekly. Those 30 minutes are a great time to doze off as the blue, red and infrared lights work their magic! From one treatment, you will immediately notice improvement in your skin. Mine looked clear and radiant despite the peel and extractions I had just undergone. With continued treatments you will see noticeable reductions in acne, acne scarring, redness, fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin conditions.

Celluma is the best new tool for improving the appearance of your skin. It’s a great addition to any facial and will maximize the benefits of your skin care routine. Schedule an appointment now to give it a try! The talented estheticians at Wax Me Boutique are eager to introduce you to this amazing new treatment.

Teen Facials

The teenage years are the perfect time to establish healthy skin care habits. Teenagers face changes to change the way their skin looks and feels as they begin to go through puberty and often are not educated on how to care for their skin. A session with an esthetician is the perfect time to introduce them to a skin care regimen, learn what the best products for their skin type are, and help them manage any skin concerns before they get out of hand.

Acne is perhaps the most common skin concern for teenagers, and a trained esthetician can help manage breakouts as well as perform extractions skillfully, keeping the teenager from picking at their face and causing scarring. It’s also a great opportunity to educate a teen on how to manage dryness, oiliness, and the importance of maintaining a daily routine. Finally, a teen can learn about environmental protection and the importance of sun care.

Beyond establishing healthy skin care habits, preventing skin problems early, and educating a young person on ambient protection, facials have many benefits. Teens today are more stressed than ever before, and have to deal with heightened pressure at school and in extracurricular activities. They also spend less time engaging in physical activity and more time in front of screens. Facials can be a great stress reliever and do wonders for a complexion that may be sallow or lack color from a modern lifestyle.

At Wax Me Boutique, we offer a Teen Facial that is designed uniquely for teenagers! This facial is gentle and non-intimidating, and is a great introduction to the world of routine skin care. Our estheticians are trained to work with teens to ensure they are comfortable and can learn about skin care as part of the treatment. We tailor the treatment to ensure that we address each individual’s skin concerns in our session. Contact us today to find out more or book an appointment!
