Make the Switch to Mineral Sunscreen

By now, you’ve got your sunscreen game down. You put in on your face every morning no matter the weather, to protect you from wrinkles, brown spots, premature aging, as well as more serious issues like skin cancer- right? Good for you! Even cloudy days have damaging sun rays that can wreak serious havoc on your skin- but you already know that.

Let’s talk about the sunscreen you’re using. Any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen at all, of course, but certain types of sunscreens are better for your skin and your overall health than others. All of the latest data shows that mineral sunscreens are what you want to be using, particularly since you use it every day. The FDA recently discovered that some forms of chemical SPF can be absorbed into your bloodstream, even after one day of using it. These chemicals have the potential to disrupt your hormones, which can really mess with your body. They are also more likely to trigger a negative reaction with your skin, which is the last thing you want after all of the effort you have put in to your skincare routine.

Mineral sunscreen is also more effective at sun protection. These form an actual physical barrier on your skin, preventing UVA and UVB rays from penetrating it at all. Chemical sunscreen is absorbed by your skin, and then absorbs harmful rays for you. This means your skin is more exposed to harmful rays than it would be with mineral sunscreen. At Wax Me Boutique, we now sell TIZO brand sunscreen which is a mineral sunscreen with a silky finish. It is gentle on your skin, plant based, free of chemicals and reef friendly. Stop by today to stock up!

Remember: always wear sunscreen on your face. Bonus point if you’re using mineral sunscreen.

You Should Be Using Hyaluronic Acid

When hearing the word “acid”, many of us flash back to images of chemical peels gone wrong. Rest assured, this is not that kind of acid. Hyaluronic acid is a moisturizing particle that helps your skin retain water. in fact, it is naturally found in areas like your joints, eye sockets, healing wounds, and more -areas your body needs to keep moisturized.

This little miracle ingredient addresses signs of skin aging caused by time  (including decreased production of hyaluronic acid) and changes in the body as well as signs of aging caused by exposure to elements- sun, harsh winds, and more. Hyaluronic acid addresses both types of skin aging.

When you’re using hyaluronic acid, you’ll see a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as well as dry and flaky skin. Your skin will be softer, more elastic, and more moisturized. This ingredient is truly a crucial part of caring for your skin and maintaining a youthful glow.

How can you incorporate it this wonder-ingredient into your skincare routine? Talk to your aesthetician about products that contain hyaluronic acid and which ones are right for your skin. 7 Habits for Your Best Skin

Want great skin? We all want it, but to get glowing, no-foundation-needed skin, you’ve got to put in the work. Your skin is going to be a reflection of your internal and external environment, so always keep in mind that all of your choices will show up on your skin.

  1. Eat Right

Your skin’s structures require protein in order to build up healthy looking skin. Lean proteins like fish or chicken are great, as are nuts and limited dairy like Greek yogurt. Fish is a great source of protein because it also has those omega-3 fatty acids that your skin loves.

Fruits and vegetables are also crucial for great skin, in particular those high in antioxidants as well as vitamins A, C and E. A balanced diet of mostly unprocessed foods and should keep you on the right track.

2. Hydrate

Hydration is necessary for all parts of your body, not just your skin. When you’re not properly hydrated, your body is unable to perform all of its tasks like detoxification. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink up- sip on water throughout the day so your body has a steady supply, and so that you are drinking enough water. The right amount will vary by person, so find the right balance for you by drinking water anytime your body doesn’t feel like it’s working properly and increasing the amount you drink when the weather is warm or dry.

3. Sun Protection

The best protection from the sun is avoiding it altogether, particularly during peak hours 10am to 4pm. If you are in a situation where you can’t avoid the sun, be sure to slather on sunscreen with SPF 30+, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and seek shade whenever possible. The sun will greatly increase the rate of aging for your skin, and lead to sun spots, wrinkles and fine lines.

4. Protect Your Skin

None of us can fully avoid pollution in the air getting to our skin, but there are steps we can take to reduce its effect on the skin. First, cleansing the skin every morning and night using a professional cleanser recommended by your esthetician is a necessary part of your skincare routine. This helps wash off any pollution you’ve accumulated and prep you to create a barrier for the day. In the morning, you should use an antioxidant serum to help battle pollution throughout the day as well as a protective barrier. At night, use a nourishing moisturizer to repair any damage done during the day.

5. Get a Full Night’s Sleep

Your skin does all its best work while you snooze. It repairs, rebuilds, turns over new cells. If you skimp on sleep, you’re cheating your skin out of valuable recovery time. Look in the mirror in the morning after a late night, you’ll already see signs of this – puffy eyes, dry skin, the works. A few nights of full sleep will show the opposite- bright, glowing skin. Stay on a sleep schedule that allows you to be fully rested in order to keep your skin looking its best.

6. Reduce Stress

Feelings of stress release the hormone cortisol, which is destructive to skin. Your skin will lose elasticity, appear saggy and dull, and lose moisture. We can’t avoid stress but it is important to find a routine that helps you manage your stress, like meditation, a cup of tea, watching a comedic show, etc.

7. Exercise

Physical movement is crucial for skin health. Increasing your blood flow will drive more nutrients and oxygen to your skin, in turn making it healthier. Some studies have even suggested that exercise can slow, if not reverse, signs of aging.

All of these habits will lead not just to great skin but overall health! That’s because your skin is just part of the larger system of your body, and it will reflect the state that your body is in based on the choices you make. Be sure to make the best choices for yourself and your body, and your skin will develop a healthy glow.

Coffee for Your Skin

Nothing gets you out of bed faster than the smell of fresh coffee, but did you know that your skin also benefits from caffeine? Caffeine in your skincare can do wonders for your skin – just like that cup of morning joe does wonders for your day! It has amazing short and long term benefits, so keep an eye out for caffeine when you’re looking for new skincare products.

Some of the effects you can expect from caffeine in your products are:

A boost in your sun protection! Caffeine will work to enhance the SPF you wear, so look for SPF that contains caffeine or layer your sun protection with a moisturizer that has caffeine.
Caffeine is an antioxidant which fights free radicals that lead to aging. It helps prevent skin discoloration and wrinkles.
Caffeine will stimulate energy and blood flow in your skin. You will see brighter skin and decreased puffiness when you apply products containing caffeine.
Caffeine will constrict blood vessels and reduce inflammation, quickly reducing the appearance of dark circles and sagging skin.
Ready to wash your face with that freshly made coffee? Well, it’s best to stick to professionally made products that are formulated for your skin type. Caffeine is certainly a superstar ingredient in skin care, but if you’ve got a routine that works you should introduce products with caffeine slowly to make sure you don’t disrupt the balance you have.

The Nutrient Your Skin is Probably Missing

We have spent so much time purging our diets of “bad” food that we may actually be depriving our body of the nutrients it needs to flourish. There are certainly foods that have no benefit, like sugary drinks or donuts, or deep-fried Twinkies. However, one food group that we have unfairly banished from our lives is fat. Fat has certainly earned its bad reputation as the artery-clogging, heart stopping food group that it is, but we should step back and examine which types of fat are actually at fault.

Fat, in moderation and from healthy sources, can actually be the secret to maintaining a healthy glow. So what are the right sources? Fish, avocado, olive oil, nuts, and plant-based sources are great places to find the right kind of fat. These contain high concentrations of essential fatty acids that you’ve probably heard of- omega-3 and omega-6. You can also take daily supplements if you are unable to intake enough of these fats though your diet.

Of course, fats like butter, fried foods, chicken skin, etc. are not in this category. They are bad for your skin and your overall health, and should be consumed sparingly if at all. Even good fats should be consumed in moderation— they are still calorie-dense and should make up about 35% of your diet, or slightly less.

When your diet lacks these fats, your skin becomes dry, dull, and can exhibit other unhealthy appearances. You may also notice dull, brittle hair and fingernails that break easily. There are tons of health benefits to be derived from omega fatty acids, beyond improving your appearance. They help your brain, your eyes, your joints, your immune system, and so much more. How can you add these healthy fats to your diet? Snack on almonds, top off your sandwich with avocado, cook with coconut oil, munch on walnuts and brazil nuts, scoop chia seeds into your morning yogurt, or nibble on sunflower seeds. There are so many delicious ways to up your healthy fat intake!

The good news is that you should go eat a salmon and avocado roll, or get the avocado toast at brunch with a drizzle of olive oil. All of these recommended foods are delicious and easy to eat, and now we know that they are also healthy and will make your skin glow!

Protect Your Skin!

It finally feels like spring is here! It’s warm enough to dig the shorts and sundresses from the back of our closets and spend afternoons basking in the sun. Most San Diegans live for this type of weather, and after the wet winter we’ve had it feels like everyone is dying to feel that sunshine on their skin.

Before you head out the door, though, make sure you’re protecting your skin! Spring sunshine doesn’t feel as intense as summer sunshine, and it’s easy to think you can forego SPF for the afternoon. Don’t forget how much damage that can do! In addition to the obvious discomfort of a burn, sun exposure can also lead to premature aging, discoloration, and a higher risk of skin cancer.

Here are some quick reminders about how to be skin-safe as we head into our favorite time of the year! (While you should definitely be wearing sunscreen year-round, it seems especially important to remind our readers now that we’re likely to spend more time in the sun.)

  1. Higher SPF is not always better! You should be good with SPF 30 as long as you reapply after swimming, sweating, or just being in the sun for a couple of hours.
  2. The SPF in your makeup is not enough to protect your face. It’s a great protection booster, but you should not consider that enough on its own.
  3. Make sure your SPF is broad spectrum and protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  4. Don’t neglect your neck and chest. These can also be easily sun damaged and will show signs of aging as quickly as your face.

Talk to your esthetician about which sunscreen you should be using on sensitive skin like your face. At Wax Me Boutique, we have hand-selected our favorite face sunscreens to keep your skin safe without undoing all of the work you do by caring for your skin daily.

Peel a little, glow a lot!

Chemical peels sound intimidating, but they don’t have to be! We’ve all seen a chemical peel exaggerated in the media to make the recipient appear like an inflamed, peeling mess who must hide their face for days, Not the case! Peels that require downtime are outdated and unnecessary.  New approaches focus on regular peels that yield results over time, not one aggressive treatment that leaves you unable to face the world.

So, what are some other misconceptions about peels?

Well, you will not necessarily see peeling and flaking after a peel. If your skin is healthy, you may not peel at all, while unhealthy skin may require a few procedures before it visibly exfoliates.

You might hesitate to undergo a peel because your skin is sensitive or dry. You’ll be happy to hear that there are peels formulated especially for sensitive skin! You can get all the great benefits of a peel without worrying about irritating your skin.

You should not expect to see the same results every time you receive a peel. Your skin condition, environmental changes like humidity and temperature, and previous peels will affect the amount of visible exfoliating you see.

Regular chemical peels are the key to getting that jealousy-inducing glow that makes you wonder – does that person do yoga and drink green juice all day? They help your skin regenerate and turn over dead skin cells that are dulling your complexion. They are also great for reducing acne, acne scars, aging, dark spots, and other skin woes!

Still hesitant? We don’t want you to miss out on the clear, bright complexion you can get from a great series of peels. For the month of October, buy a 3 peel or treatment package for $285 ($95 each) and enjoy a complimentary Neck & Décoletté Treatment. Contact Wax Me Boutique to talk to one of our professionals about your specific skin concerns and how different peels would impact you.
